About Saas-Fee

Saas-Fee is a fantastic holiday destination for both summer and winter. There are numerous activities to explore the whole year round.

Saas-Fee in Winter:

More sun, higher mountains, more snow: Nowhere else the winter is as intensely enjoyable as in Saas-Fee. A unique world of mountains and glaciers with no less than eighteen 4’000-meter peaks, including the Dom, the highest mountain on swiss ground (4545m). You take in our snow covered Saas valley with 150 km of slopes, 26 km of cross country ski tails, 4 ski areas for children in Saas-Fee, Saas-Grund, Saas-Allmagell and Saas-Balen, 4 ice rinks, 3 sledging runs and 60 km of winter hiking trails.

It is a place where the sun shines so often it could easily be mistaken for heaven. And all the wonderful snow only makes the effect that much better. You won’t find uch reliable now cover for perfect skiing, even in summer, nywhere else.

You will never be closer to heaven:

The Cologne cathedral is 157 m tall. Saas-Fee’s highest mountain, the Dom (meaning cathedral) is 4388 m taller and just one of eighteen 4000 m peaks above our small village Saas-Fee, the pearl of the Alps. The high-altitude location of our village and ski area offers a crucial advantage: it snows here earlier and longer. While autumn at a lower altitude is wet and grey, Saas-Fee is already a powdery wonderland. And our slopes can still be used for valley descents late into the spring. No wonder Saas-Fee is the ski resort in Switzerland and the Alps with the most snow cover. While you have to ski and snowboard on green grass at other places in the Alps, Saas-Fee still offers valley descents until the end of the season. Because snow is guaranteed, you can also ski and snowboard in summer.

What’s more, blue skies are just as certain here as white slopes, since Saas-Fee lies even further south than Ascona. This means 300 days of sun per year and a mild, almost Mediterranean climate despite the high Alpine location. We have the snow cover of the north and the sunshine of the South. Hard to believe? Perhaps. But then we did warn you that winter holidays in Saas-Fee are like nowhere else!

Guaranteed snow sports fun

“You stand at the end of the world and at the same time at its origin“ wrote the great German writer Carl Zuckmayer of the village where he lived and skied for 20 years. Located among the glaciers at 1800 m a.s.l., with slopes reaching heights of up to 3600 m, the „Pearl of the Alps“ guarantees snow sports fun.

We make a promise: You’ll find a slope to suit your needs, whether you’re ready to take part in the highest glacier downhill descent in the world – our Allalin Race – or need to improve your skills at the ski school first. And even if you don’t want to ski or snowboard, Saas-Fee is still the place to be. Join a snowshoe hike, go on a cross-country trail or get on a snow tube. Read a good book on a sunny terrace while your little ones enjoy the kids’ ski area. Pamper your body and soul in a spa. And at the end of the day, relax and enjoy the après-ski. Our bars and restaurants have everything you Need to toast another perfect day in the snow.

See how refreshing Summer can be:

The winters in Saas Valley are real winters – and the summers are real summers! On four days out of five the sun shines down on the valley, and thanks to the cableways – which you can ride for free in summer if you stay overnight – the 4000m peaks surrounding the valley seem almost close enough to touch.

With every breath you take, you can feel the pure mountain air, and enjoy the delicate fragrance of the rare flowers that grow here even at 4500 m altitude thanks to our sheltered microclimate. This unique climate is also the reason why our larch forests – famous for their lush green in summer and their lovely gold in autumn – extend higher up than any other forests in the Alps.

Whether you want action of relaxation – discover a refreshingly different kind of summer in the „Pearl of the Alps“!

Even your little ones will feel at home among our giant glaciers!

Back to the future – Sustainable Tourism:

Listed bard buildings with sun-bleached larch beams, narrow lanes, impressive cavalries and stone roofs: Saas-Fee is as charming as it has always been. Come and experience the traditional character that Saas-Fee has worked to preserve. You’ll soon see that our guiding principle for tourism is „sustainable development“. In everything we do today, we must take care not to negatively impact upon future generations. That’s why Saas-Fee is car free and has been since 1951, when the community decided that locals and tourists alike should leave their cars at the entrance  of the village. The village of Saas-Fee is working to preserve not just the past, but also the future.

Alliance in the Alps

Saas Fee piloted the “Alliance in the Alps” project back in 1996. Now over 200 Alpine municipalities have signed up to the alliance. Together they work to ensure that the Alpine Convention’s objectives for sustainable development in the Alpine region are accomplished. www.alpinallianz.org

Energy town

In June 2002, Saas-Fee was awarded with the prestigious „Energy Town“ status. The award is reserved for communities that make an outstanding contribution towards sustainability and has been given to Saas-Fee for its energy and transport policy. Saas-Fee takes the environmental protection very seriously. Particle filters on wood-burning fireplaces have made Saas-Fee fine-dust free and 100 percent of the community’s electricity – even for the lifts and cableways – comes from hydropower erected in the Valais. No other Swiss residential area and tourist destination makes such use of green electricity. www.energiestadt.ch

In Saas-Fee all holiday apartments that can be booked are given 1 to 5 star classifications. We also promote the Quality Program of Swiss Tourism for the development and assurance of quality in the tourist industry. www.stv-fst.ch
